Dear JGW Families,
I am excited to share that Mr. Kevin Higginbottom has been officially named the next Principal of John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School.
Mr. Higginbottom was selected following a comprehensive and inclusive hiring process that involved school staff, union representatives, and administrators from both JGW and Central Office. Out of a highly qualified pool of candidates, Mr. Higginbottom quickly distinguished himself. He advanced to a final round of interviews, where he completed a performance task analyzing JGW school data and outlining areas for improvement and next steps. His response was thoughtful and reflective, recognizing both the important progress made this year and the work still ahead.
Over the past year, as interim principal, Mr. Higginbottom has shown an unwavering commitment to the Whittier school community. His leadership has been marked by grit, determination, and a deep belief in the potential of our students and staff. While this year has come with its challenges, as is expected in any school undergoing turnaround, Mr. Higginbottom has consistently led with integrity and purpose. He has taken the reins of the school and has fought every day for what is best for our students.
Mr. Higginbottom brings a strong educational background and a wealth of leadership experience to the role. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Syracuse University, a Master of Education in Science Education from Boston University, and a Certificate of Advanced Educational Specialization in Educational Leadership from Boston College. His experience includes nine years as Supervisor of Science & Technology for Haverhill Public Schools and eleven years in school leadership roles, including Assistant Principal at North Middlesex Regional High School and Principal at Reading Memorial High School.
At the heart of Mr. Higginbottom’s leadership is a belief in the power of relationships, open communication, and a strong sense of community. He is passionate about being visible in classrooms, supporting student achievement, coaching teachers, and ensuring that all students feel supported, especially during key transition points in their academic journey.
We are confident that Mr. Higginbottom will continue to build on the momentum of this year and lead JGW into a bright future. Please join us in congratulating him and continuing to support his efforts to make Whittier Middle School a place where every student can thrive.
Warmly,
Margaret Marotta, EdD
