As we head into the final month of the year, December, we are excited to share all we have accomplished together as a district, from classroom achievements and community events to new initiatives that continue to strengthen our schools. In this month’s newsletter, we highlight the many ways our students, educators, families, and community partners contribute to a thriving learning environment.
December also brings many celebrations and activities as we celebrate the Holiday season. This edition features upcoming events, important reminders, and resources to help families stay informed and connected during this busy time. Please visit our school websites for the most up-to-date information regarding these events. Our students have worked hard, and we hope you join us as they reach these milestones and create everlasting memories.
The Haverhill Community offers a wealth of resources for individuals and families in need, along with many local organizations that greatly appreciate donations to support their work. Several of our schools are also hosting their own food and clothing drives—please check with your child’s school for details on how you can participate or contribute. We have the Haverhill Community Resource page on our website to share these resources with you.
As winter settles in, so does the possibility of weather-related delays and cancellations. The HPS District shares updates as soon as information becomes available to us through multiple platforms, including school websites, ParentSquare notifications (phone, text, and email), and our social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), as well as local media outlets. Please note that New England weather can be challenging to predict, and we make every decision using the most current forecasts, with the safety of our students and staff as our top priority. We appreciate your patience and understanding when conditions change quickly or decisions must be adjusted.
Thank you for your continued partnership and involvement. We hope you enjoy this month’s updates and take pride in the progress we have made as a community—warm wishes to you and your families for a safe, joyful, and restorative holiday season.

Rain or shine, snow or wind — Deb is there with her radiant smile, kind words, and a heart full of love for every student who crosses her path.
For the past 13 years, Deb has been a proud member of the Haverhill Public Schools family, creating a safe and welcoming environment for students every single day.
“I have a great atmosphere where I cross. It’s home to me. My kids every year have been my heart,” she shares. “I tease my kids to come back and visit. I’ll be the crossing guard with the walker, equipped with a stop sign up high!”
Deb, your dedication, joy, and connection with our students make you truly one of a kind. Thank you for being a daily reminder that kindness and community matter.
We Are Haverhill Spotlight — celebrating the people who make our schools and city shine.

Transportation Department
Professional Development Spotlight!
Our Transportation Team held a full Professional Development Day on November 4th (Election Day) focused on safety and student support!
Topics included:
- EpiPen Training for emergency preparedness.
- CPR/First Aid to ensure readiness for any medical situation.
- Tablet Training Scavenger Hunt to boost technology skills.
- Techniques for Working with Children to ensure positive and safe rides.
- Proper Railroad Crossing Procedures for school buses, demonstrated by staff to ensure maximum student safety.
Who says learning can’t be fun?
Our commitment to continuous learning to provide the best and safest transportation for our students is just one of the many reasons WeAreHaverhill!
We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Kristin Tufts
Meet Kristin Tufts, our amazing 6th Grade Math Teacher at J.G. Whittier Middle School!
In her first year at JGW, Kristin has already made a significant impact. Her positivity and passion for teaching shine through in the classroom—and extend beyond it. She’s often seen joining students at recess, building strong connections, and making learning meaningful both inside and outside the classroom.
Kristin grew up right here in Haverhill and is thrilled to be teaching in her hometown. A proud mom of three young children, she brings warmth, dedication, and a deep love for education to everything she does. While she once struggled with math as a student, she found a passion for it through real-world connections—and now shares that excitement with her students every day.
Before joining Haverhill Public Schools, Kristin spent 10 years teaching at a Montessori school. We’re fortunate to have her as part of the JGW community!
Join us in celebrating Kristin and all she brings to our students.
Greenleaf Academy
A flavorful day at Greenleaf Academy!
Chefs Oscar and Ramon teamed up to deliver an amazing hands-on culinary experience for our students.
School Counseling Department
The Counseling Department had a fantastic day with our students at Rivier University in Nashua, NH!
Students explored the campus with the help of amazing student ambassadors and admissions counselors. They toured the library, the new Science and Counseling buildings, nursing labs, gymnasium, and fitness center—and even enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Dion Dining Commons (treats galore!)
Along the way, they learned about the REAP process, early admissions, and the financial benefits of applying early.
Next stop on our college journey: Lesley University!
Haverhill Community Resources
As the weather gets colder, we know that food and clothing insecurities can be a growing concern for some families.
Many of our schools are hosting Food and Clothing Drives and The Mayor’s Food Drive is underway — this is an excellent opportunity to support neighbors in need or to seek assistance if you could use a little extra help.
Visit our Community Resource page for a wealth of information about local support programs and services. Many of our schools also offer assistance for families — please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school for more helpful information.
Together, we can ensure everyone in our community stays nourished and cared for this season.

Big congratulations to the Haverhill High School Girls’ Swim & Dive Team!
The Hillies captured the 2025 MIAA Division I North Sectional Title with a team score of 291, topping an 18-team field at MIT on November 2!

Community Schools at Nettle
The students in the Functional Academics classroom have been hard at work caring for Nettle’s aquaponics setup!
Aquaponics is a sustainable farming method that combines fish and hydroponics — and our students are learning all about it firsthand. Every day, they feed the tilapia, check the water levels, and care for the growing lettuce and cilantro.
The best part? Their goal is to provide fresh produce for Nettle’s Community Food Pantry — growing food and giving back!
This is what makes community schools awesome — and this is why we are Haverhill!

Staff explored their role in shaping this important initiative, collaborated to define the qualities of a high-quality learner and graduate, and identified the essential skills every HHS graduate should possess.
This collaborative effort marks the first step in building a shared culture among students, staff, and families centered around our Vision of the Graduate—and in creating the structures to support it.

Consentino Middle School
Charger Highlight | Community in Action
We’re proud to spotlight Dan Sullivan, 7th Grade ELA Teacher at Consentino Middle School and part-time local trivia host, who is going above and beyond to support our school community.
In an inspiring act of generosity, Mr. Sullivan turned his trivia nights into a fundraiser to benefit the Consentino Food Pantry. Here’s how he describes it:
“In conjunction with my NJHS’ Food Drive, I told patrons at my trivia nights that all tips received until SNAP was restored would go directly to purchasing food and other essentials to supplement Consentino’s Food Bank. When I told my wife this, she immediately got online and built a donation platform for friends and family to contribute. We raised $600 in the first week and are nearing $1,000 total heading into the second weekend. We hope to keep the ball rolling and inspire others to help the community in any way they can.”
Thank you, Mr. Sullivan, for your compassion, creativity, and commitment to our students and families. You are an inspiration to us all and a true example of why WeAreHaverhill!
Career Technical Education
CTE Biomedical Science Freshmen took a field trip to the Northern Essex Community College Lawrence Campus. The students solved a forensics poisoning mystery by performing various lab tests on food. They got to use some equipment they had never used before like a water bath and a vortexer. They also toured the healthcare building and participated in various simulations, including removing surgical staples from a wound and interacting with various animatronic mannequins to feel pulse, count respiratory rate, measure blood oxygen levels and more. Students were also introduced to the many associate’s degree and certificate programs that the college has to offer. We are so grateful to Carolyn Knoepfler, Dean of STEM, Kathy Hudson, Dean of Healthcare and Biology professors, Ken Thomas and Kim Waligora for facilitating a fantastic day for the students. It was a fun and educational day!

HHS CTE Graphic Design and Visual Communication Students visited the Museum of Printing here in Haverhill on Wednesday. The museum president and historian Frank Romano presented to students about the history and importance of typography in graphic design. Followed by a trip through the museum learning about the history of printing, seeing early hand-scribed Bibles from the 1300s and 1400s, and other historic documents. Students enjoyed demonstrations on the workings of early printing presses and other printing technologies. They had the opportunity to ask questions of experts about early photography, typewriters, and other technologies used by graphic and print designers throughout history. Students are invited to return for workshops on using wood-carved and other historic printing and graphic tools. Today in class, students could be heard discussing in depth their typography choices on current projects. Maggie Rizzo, a current Graphic Design student, called the experience “Ravishing”. The students worked as a team to help organize the shipment of sweatshirts that had just arrived! It was an excellent experience for all. We want to thank all the Museum of Printing volunteers who shared their time to make this day memorable for our students.

Career Technical Education
HHS CTE Juniors in the PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering/Manufacturing programs had the opportunity to visit Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Students learned about the admissions process, toured the beautiful campus, and heard directly from current WPI students about their experiences.
WPI is a global leader in project-based learning and a top-tier technological university built on the principle that students learn best by applying theory to real-world problem solving. One highlight of the visit for both staff and students was learning about WPI’s major project experience, where all students have the opportunity to travel abroad and collaborate on community-based projects that make a real impact.
A huge thank you to WPI for hosting us and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators!

Every student and staff member jumped in to take part, making it a fun-filled day of community spirit, friendly competition, and lots of excitement before we head into Thanksgiving break. Thanks to everyone’s participation, we were able to raise funds that will be split between our PTO and the Washington, D.C. trip fundraiser. It is a win-win for our school community!
We can’t wait to make this awesome event a new JGW tradition!
